Fingerplays aren't just fun - they have loads of benefits!

Miss Pam

What are fingerplays?

Fingerplays and gestures involve using fingers and hands to perform actions that accompany a song or poem.

They are a fun and engaging way for young children to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye co-ordination and language skills.

Fingerplays can be done with or without music and involve simple, repetitive movements that are easy for young children to learn and remember.  Here are 5 fingerplays and the accompanying words.

Some of the key benefits of fingerplays and gesturing:

  1. Enhancing fine motor skills: The intricate finger movements can help develop fine motor skills, which are essential for writing, drawing, and other activities that require hand-eye coordination.

  2. Promoting language development: Fingerplays often involve singing or reciting rhymes, which can help children develop language skills such as vocabulary, pronunciation, and rhythm.

  3. Improving memory and concentration: These activities involve repetition and require children to remember the lyrics and movements, which can help improve memory and concentration.

  4. Encouraging socialisation: Fingerplays are often done in a group setting, which can help children learn to take turns, cooperate, and interact with others.
